Architecture - Rough is enough

Think Hanging Gardens of Babylon - Brutalist-style - in the middle of bustling Berlin. Lobe Block (otherwise known as ‘Terrassenhaus Berlin’) is a monumental building in a subzone of Berlin-Mitte called ‘Wedding’.

With an overhanging, fully glazed frontage facing Böttgerstraße, it gives the impression of a structure that is sleek and finished. Its large glass fronts harness the sunlight of the changing seasons. But delve into the well-hidden back of the building and you’ll be surprised: wide, abundant terraces open like a cascade towards the south.

This is no accident: this expanse of openness and green space establishes the terraces as an extended garden for the community to enjoy. And with a 360-degree view of Berlin from the rooftop, we mean real openness.

Unconventional? Yes. This forward-thinking project ties sustainability, interaction, social responsibility, and community together in a meaningful, conscious, and breath-freeing space. Just what we need for a modern work-life balance.

We give architectural tours of the building which last approximately one hour. We take you into three units and walk you through the garden, ground floor and rooftop, while talking to you about the architectural process, the history and financing structure of the building, as well as the private-public nature of the Lobe Block. There will also be time for Q&A at the end.

Berlin’s renowned, adventurous architect’s offices, Brandlhuber + Emde and Burlon / Muck Petzet Architekten, created Lobe Block’s award winning design.

A highlight was the prestigious Mies van der Rohe European prize.

Check out this short video - filmed when the building was just finished, and giving a real flavour to understanding the Lobe Block.
